Mathematical Association of Botswana (MAB) is a non-profit making association registered with Registrar of Societies on the 3rd January 1980, in Gaborone. The vision of the Association is to provide support to Mathematics educators for the development of the profession and leadership in a changing, technologically-driven and communication-focused society. This vision can be achieved through professional development of mathematics educators, talent identification and development amongst school youth, development of problem solving skills and advocacy for high quality education.


The aims and objectives of the Association are promotion of mathematics education and enhancement of quality of teaching and learning through the following:
  • (i) promotion of excellence in schools mathematics curriculum, instruction and assessment,
  • (ii) stimulation of learners' interest, promoting high level achievement and instilling high confidence in the learning of mathematics,
  • (iii) advocacy for excellence, high quality education and professional development,
  • (iv) promotion of research and application of mathematics to real-life situations,
  • (vi) development of partnerships and collaborations to transform mathematics teaching, learning and research,
  • (vii) engagement in socio-economic, political and cultural development activities and
  • (viii) broad based participation in out-reach and enrichment mathematics programmes; and
  • (ix) engaging in mathematics competitions and problems solving contests.

MAB Management Team

The Mathematics Association of Botswana is run by an Executive Committee comprising of Mathematics professionals from National Colleges, Universities and secondary school teachers. The members have led school teams to mathematics competitions; coordinated national and regional mathematics competitions, organized mathematics conferences and workshops in Botswana and in the Southern region of Africa.

All who have an interest in the teaching and learning of Mathematics at all levels should belong to this dynamic Association.

Our members include university, college, junior, and senior secondary school mathematics teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences.

Who Needs Mathematics?

Mathematics, as a science, plays a big role in addressing many problems such as global warming, over-population, starvation, traffic congestion, terrorism and war. In combating and addressing some of these problems, mathematics as the language of modern science generally, can play a big role
